Abstract
Study question: What is the degree of knowledge that young people who begin university studies have about the care and preservation of fertility?
Answer: Young people have insufficient and superficial knowledge.
What is already known: The understanding of fertility in the population is poor and the possibility of pregnancy tends to be overestimated, the time in which the woman is most fertile and the decline in the reproductive stage after 35 years is ignored .
Study design: Quali-quantitative. Descriptive cross section. The results were tabulated in Excel.
Materials and methods: Surveys were carried out on young (N: 376) university students from the Buenos Aires suburbs: sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics, reproductive health, beliefs of risk behaviors associated with infertility, reasons for the preservation of fertility, family planning, perception of the optimal age for childbearing. Statistical calculations and crossovers of variables were made by gender of the respondents.
Results: 98% of the sample is between 17 and 23 years old. 67% have a large family with an income of up to 40,000 pesos. 73% of the sample considers that the deterioration of the ovarian capacity of women begins after the age of 40. Of the women interviewed, 59.2% do not believe that the issue of family planning should be discussed with the gynecologist. 18% say they do not know the causes of infertility in women, a figure that rises to 32% of ignorance of the causes of infertility in men.
Study limitations: The sample is made up of university students from the western area of the Buenos Aires suburbs.
Implication of the findings: Coinciding with other research, I consider that knowledge of fertility in young populations favors adequate decision-making about the reproductive future and avoids risk behaviors.
Key words: Fertility/ Young Adult / Fertility Preservation
